Day One

I thought I had a good idea of what my first day in the Army would be like.

I’d seen lots of movies. I talked to all my friends who had gone through the experience.

I was ready … I thought.

Are you non-essential?

The State of Montana has decided that I am non-essential.

That doesn’t sound like a good thing.

Did I do something wrong?

Did I offend someone?

Does it mean I have no worth?

Once upon a time,
long, long ago,
there was this thing called
THE DRAFT.

But there were other options as well and people had to make decisions.

What to do?

Episode 2 Bell bottoms? You can’t be serious.

There was this war going on and the country realized they needed soldiers … lots and lots of soldiers.

The politicians looked around and there we were — the Baby Boomers.

We were the perfect solution to their problem.
